Serbantez Headlines Latest Roster Additions

 

 

Latest Signings include a Pair of Returners

 

 

March 8, 2021 – With the 2021 Texas Collegiate League season just a few months away, the Victoria Generals announce their recent signings to bolster their roster as they battle for a championship in the Texas Collegiate League.  This week, the Generals have announced the addition of four players, including Deryk Serbantez and AJ Irvin returning from the 2020 season. Also signing are newcomers Cody Cleveland (Southern Illinois) and Ayden Makarus (LSU-Eunice)  This will be the 13th season for the Victoria Generals  as they take the field at Riverside Stadium in late May. 

 

"We are extremely excited to get the 2021 season started and the latest improvements in Covid numbers are extremely encouraging as we prepare for the season," commented Mike Yokum, Generals Vice President and General Manager. "A full schedule is planned with plenty of new and exciting features to enjoy an evening of Generals baseball at Riverside Stadium."

 

Pitcher Deryk Serbantez, a junior at The University of Texas-RGV, will return for his third season on the mound for the Generals. Serbantez appeared in seven games (four starts) last season for the Generals,  allowing 15 hits, eight earned runs, striking out 20 batters, while compiling a 3.48 earned run average.  Serbantez (as of 03/07/21) in 2021 for UT-RGV has appeared in three games in relief  (4.1 innings) allowing four hits, two earned runs with one walk while compiling an earned run average of 4.15 with a pair of saves on the season. 

 

Pitcher AJ Irvin, a red-shirt sophomore from The University of Texas-Tyler, will also return to the Generals for his third season on the mound. Last Summer for the Generals, Irvin appeared in six games (9.2 innings) allowing 10 hits, two earned runs, with 10 strikeouts, one walk and an earned run average of 1.86 on the season. Irvin thus far in 2021 for UT-Tyler (as of 03/07/21) has appeared in five games, allowing two earned runs on five hits, while striking out six and compiling a 2.45 earned run average and a 1-0 record on this young season.

 

Infielder Cody Cleveland, a sophomore from Southern Illinois University, will take the field for the Generals after a solid shortened season in 2020 at Northeast Texas Junior College. Cleveland appeared in 20 games with 64 at-bats, 26 hits, scored 23 runs, with a triple, five home runs, 15 runs batted in, 10 stolen bases and a .406 batting average.

 

Catcher Ayden Makarus, a freshman from Okotoks, Alberta, Canada, is in his second season at LSU- Eunice after a shortened freshman season in 2020. Makarus was off to a great start in 2020 appearing in 14 games, scoring 14 runs on 18 hits, four doubles, three home runs, 17 runs batted in and a team leading on-base percentage of .520 on the Covid shortened season. Makarus is off to another hot start (as of 03/07/21) appearing in 14 games, scoring six runs on 14 hits, four doubles, three home runs, 13 runs batted in while compiling a .368 batting average on the season.

 

The Victoria Generals will play 48 games with 24 of the games being played here in Victoria at Riverside Stadium.
