Victoria, TX – The Generals looked to complete the sweep against the Texarkana Twins tonight. In a high scoring game, with multiple lead changes that seemed like it would go into extra innings, Luis Vargas delivered a home run that boosted the Generals to victory. The final score was 9 to 7.
The Twins got off to a hot start with two home runs in the first inning. One was a rare inside the park home run, and the other sailed over the left field fence. The Generals responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Both teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the game. In the top of the ninth inning, the Twins were down one run with two outs. A wild pitch allowed the baserunner to score to tie the game. In the bottom half of the inning, Parker Osburn was walked, and the winning run was on base. Luis Vargas stepped up to the plate following Osburn’s at-bat. The home run came on the eighth pitch of the at bat, and the Generals met Vargas at home plate.
Vargas went two for four with 3 RBIs and a walk. Center fielder, Michael Williams, went three for four with an RBI and two runs scored. Chase Evans was also three for four at the plate and two runs scored.
Starting pitcher Pedro Garcia threw six innings for the Generals, and struck out eight batters. Garcia walked only two batters, and gave up seven hits. Jack Woodland, Chris Fearon, and Zach Smith each pitched one of the final three innings. Woodland struck out one batter and gave up three hits, and Fearon struck out two while giving up one hit.
The Generals will be on the road for their next game this Friday, July 20th, to take on the Acadiana Cane Cutters at 7:05 PM. The two teams face off for a two game series before the Generals return home.
