With the 2017 season just ending, the TCL has announced the Texas Collegiate League Award Winners for the 2017 season. The Generals took a total of five awards this season including Gabriel Sequeira, Pitcher of the Year, Jack Kenley as Freshman of the Year, and First Team All-TCL selections Darien Simms, Glen McClain and Jack Kenley.
Gabriel Sequeira took home the award asthe TCL's best pitcher with an outstanding season with the Generals. Sequeira, a Freshman from Sam Houston State University, appeared in eight games (four starts) threw 40.2 innings, with 47 strikeouts, 16 walks, compiled a 3-0 record allowing only 5 runs on the season and an ERA of 1.10. Sequeira also took home the Victoria Generals season award as the Pitcher of the Year.
Jack Kenley, a Freshman from the University of Arkansas, took home the Freshman of the Year award for the top Freshman in the Texas Collegiate League as well as First Team All-TCL Third Baseman. Kenley had an incredible season appearing in 37 games, hit .319 (team leading) with 138 plate appearances, scored 33 runs on 44 hits, nine doubles (team high), two triples, two home runs, 22 RBI's, 29 walks, five stolen bases and had an on-base average of .457 (team leading). Kenley was also solid defensively with a .952 fielding percentage. Kenley also took home the Victoria Generals award as the General of the Year.
Darien Simms, a Sophomore from Northeast Texas Community College, took home the Texas Collegiate League First Team All-TCL Outfielder award as the top outfielder in the TCL. Simms had a remarkable season for the Generals hitting .301 with 176 at bats (team high), scoring 46 runs (team high), 53 hits (team high), six doubles, 22 RBI's, 46 walks (league high), 27 stolen bases (league high). Simms also had an outstanding season defensively with a 1.000 fielding percentage with 103 putouts in 403 innings played. Simms also won the Victoria Generals season award as the Player of the Year for the 2017 season. Simms will be attending Sam Houston State University in the Fall.
Glen McClain, a Junior from Indiana Tech, took home First Team All-TCL First Base award as the top first baseman in the Texas Collegiate League. McClain appeared in 38 games, hit .317 with 123 at bats, scored 21 runs on 39 hits, with three doubles, a triple, a home run, 20 RBI's, 29 walks and two stolen bases. McClain had an on-base percentage of .462 (second on the team) McClain was a NAIA Gold Glove winner at first base in the Spring for Indiana Tech.
