(Victoria, Tx) The league leading and nationally ranked Victoria Generals quickly dispatched the hard charging Coppell Copperheads in Texas Collegiate League action Wednesday evening.
Blake Ford threw seven strong innings scattering 6 hits to pick up his third win of the summer. The Lamar sophmore struck out seven while walking one. He allowed two runs in the first inning and then posted zeros the rest of the way. Trevor Lundgrin took over in the 8th and allowed just one hit the rest of the way as the Generals won 13-2. The offense posted 4 runs in the second, third and 8th innings .
The Copperheads had won 4 in a row and eight of their last 10 games.
The offensive outburst was highlighted by a leadoff home run by James Hipp, his third this season and a two run shot by catcher Zach Briggs, his second. Hipp finished the night with three hits and 4 rbi. Briggs, Bryson Miles and Mark Hudson had two hits each for the Generals. Hudson's .370 batting average leads the TCL by 25 points.
Ford's seven strikeouts raises his total to 49 which is tied for third in the TCL. The Generals pitching staff leads the league with a 2.89 era.
The Generals and Copperheads will play game two of the series tonight (Thursday) at Riverside Park. First pitch is slated for 7:05.
The Generals are 27-14 and ranked #18 in the nation. This is their innaugural season. They have clinched the regular season title and will be seeded first in the post season tournament which begins Monday.
