(Bryan, Tx) The Texas Collegiate League leading Victoria Generals defeated the Brazos Valley Bombers Saturday evening behind the complete game pitching of Chase Cleveland. The tough 3-2 victory leaves the Generals with a five game lead over the East Texas Pumpjacks with 5 games to play.
The Generals, now 26-13, were led by the bottom of the order. Joey Kenworthy led off the 4th with a single and eventually scored on a passed ball. Then in the fifth inning, Tyler King singled to lead off the inning, Kenworthy bunted him over, and then King scored from second on an error by the Bombers second baseman. Then in the sixth, Kenny Jackson drew a 2 out walk, Brian Nephew singled him to third and King singled him home for what proved to be the gamewinner.
Cleveland carried a one hitter into the seventh and the defense was a key to his success against the Bombers. The ninth was highlighted by a strikeout - throw out double play as Michael Pair gunned down the attempted steal.
The Generals and Bombers conclude the series Sunday evening at 7:05. The Generals return home for the final home stand of the regular season on Thursday.
