Generals Return Two Islanders from Texas A&M Corpus Christi
January 15, 2014 – For the past five seasons, the Victoria Generals of the Texas Collegiate League have had at least one player on the roster from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi. This year is no different as the Generals return two right handed pitchers from their 2013 roster. Kaleb Keith and Tyler Schnuriger will be returning after solid seasons last year with the Generals.
“We’re very fortunate to have a great relationship with the coaching staff in Corpus Christi,” commented Mike Yokum, the Vice President and General Manager for the Victoria Generals. “They have always sent us some of their top players every season, and this year is no different.”
Kaleb Keith, a sophomore from San Antonio, was tied with the team lead last Summer with 20 appearances and two starts. Kaleb had 22 strikeouts in 29 innings pitched while holding his opponent to a .155 batting average. In those 29 innings, Kaleb only gave up four walks. He finished up the regular season with three saves.
“Kaleb is a big, strong, and physical kid with a power arm,” said Yokum. “He’ll also have the ability to come in and gets some at bats for us this summer as a designated hitter or first baseman.”
Prior to Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, Keith attended D’Hanis High School in San Antonio where he was a First-Team All-State selection as a pitcher. As a senior, Keith went 12-2 with 166 strikeouts in 81.2 innings on the mound while also hitting .456 with 20 doubles, three triples, six home runs, 43 RBIs, 33 runs scored, and 33 walks. For his efforts, Keith was the named the Area and District 30-A MVP while being selected to the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Team.
Also returning for his third season with the Generals is right handed pitcher Tyler Schnuriger. Tyler, a junior, came in last season in the final three weeks of the season and made an instant impact. Tyler made four regular season appearances with one start, struck out 10 and did not give up an earned run. He started in game two of the championship series against the Bombers and pitched five scoreless innings in route to a 7-0 shutout.
In his first Summer with the Generals in 2012, Schnuriger made nine starts for the Generals and posted a 2-4 record with a 3.78 ERA. The right-hander struck out 38 batters in 54.2 innings of work.
“Tyler is a great kid who can come into any situation and handle the pressure,” Said Yokum. “He’ll be a strong team leader for us this upcoming Summer without a doubt.”
