Generals Beat Cane Cutters to Advance to TCL Championship Series

The Victoria Generals defeated the Acadiana Cane Cutters 12-5 on Saturday night in Victoria to advance to the TCL Championship Series for the fourth time in five years. The Generals will take on a familiar foe in the Brazos Valley Bombers who they eliminated last season in the divisional round of the playoffs.

The Generals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off of Cane Cutters’ ace pitcher Jake Winston. The Generals recorded six straight hits with two outs in the inning. Romeo Cortina nailed a double down the left field line and came into score on a David Paiz, Jr. single up the middle. Jordan Camel then smoked a double into the left-centerfield gap to bring Paiz in all the way from first base. J.D. Stinnett then drilled a pitch past the Cane Cutter’s second baseman to plate Camel. Hayden Vesely singled to left field and J.D. Arrowood lined a shot to left to score Stinnett to cap the inning.

Jacob Hubert made it 5-0 with an RBI single to right field to score Stinnett in the third inning.

In the fourth, Cortina walked, stole second, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Camel.

The Cane Cutters pitching staff helped the Generals out in the bottom of the sixth inning. After loading the bases on two walks and a hit-by-pitch, Hayden Vesely drew a walk to score Paiz. J.D. Arrowood then grounded into a fielder’s choice, but an error on the throw to the plate was wide allowing Camel to score. Hubert, J.B. Moss, and Cortina the each drew walks with the bases loaded to make the score 11-0 in favor of the Generals.

The Cane Cutters scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to cut the Generals lead to 11-5. The Generals added their final run in the bottom of the eighth on a Frank Cloutier sac fly to score Hubert to make the final score 12-5.

Kyle Keller picked up the win for the Generals. Keller tossed six plus innings, allowing just three runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts. Juan Cortina allowed two runs on one hit in one inning. Argenis Angulo tossed the final two innings without allowing a run or a hit.

Cortina, Paiz, and Hubert each had two hits in the game for the Generals.

The Generals will host the Brazos Valley Bombers in the first game of the TCL Championship Series on Sunday night at Riverside Stadium in Victoria at 7:05pm. Games two will be played on Monday night in Bryan, and if a third game is needed in the three-game series, it will be played in Bryan on Tuesday night.
