RE: TCL action
(Victoria, Texas) The Texas Collegiate League's defending champions, The McKinney Marshalls, came into Victoria Saturday in last place, but played anything like a doormat. The Victoria Generals had their hands full from the top of the first as the Marshalls set the tone by scoring 2 quick runs. But, the first place Generals quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of the first as Andy Russell doubled home a pair of unearned runs. The Generals went on to win 10-8. Russell is tied for the league lead with 21 rbi.
Mike Davis singled home another run in the bottom of the fifth to answer a McKinney third inning run. Then in the sixth the Generals struck again. Brian Nephew walked, Joey Kenworthy singled and Bryson Miles tripled to clear the bases. The seventh also saw plenty of scoring action by the powerful General lineup. Davis was hit by a pitch, Russell walked and Kenworthy reached first on a passed ball after a strike out. Generals catcher Zach Briggs proceeded to clear the bases with a triple.
The final Generals runs came in the 8th as Brendan Mcgaheran singled, James Hipp doubled him home. Mark Hudson, one of the leading hitters in the TCL was hit by a pitch. Brian Nephew, one of the leagues hottest hitters at the moment, then singled home the final run of the game for the league leading Generals.
Chase Cleveland started for the home team and allowed 4 earned runs in five innings. Garret Steward picked up his third win with 1.1 innings of relief and Zach Nudding notched his sixth save with an eventful ninth. He struck out the side, but allowed a 2 run home run to Cody Gambill drawing the challengers to within two runs.
The two teams square off again Sunday evening at Riverside Park in the final game of this 2 game series. The Generals are now 22-12 and riding a four game winning streak.
