Drew Featherston hit a walk-off single into right field in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Victoria Generals a 9-8 win over the East Texas Pump Jacks on Friday night at Riverside Stadium in Victoria. The Pump Jacks scored five runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game up before Featherston’s walk-off game winner that scored Jacob Hubert.
Leading 8-3 headed to the ninth inning, the Generals sent closer Kaleb Keith to the mound. The Pump Jacks cut the lead to 8-5 with the help of two Generals errors. With two outs and down the their last strike in the game, Garrett McMullen drilled an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for a three-run home run to tie the game at 8-8.
Generals starting pitcher Chase Angelle was in line for the win, but received a no decision despite a quality outing. Angelle allowed just two runs on six hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work.
Daniel Tunchez allowed an unearned run in the seventh inning.
Juan Cortina picked up the win, striking out the one batter he faced following the McMullen home run.
The Generals offense started out hot from the start on Friday night. Frank Cloutier singled to lead off the game before Romeo Cortina smacked the first pitch he saw on the night over the left field fence for a two-run home run. It was Cortina’s second home run of the season. Jordan Camel made it 3-0 on an RBI single to score Jace Reese.
Romeo Cortina picked up his third RBI of the game in the second inning on an RBI groundout to score Cloutier who had walked to lead off the inning. Cloutier walked three times in the ballgame.
Cloutier was in the middle of the scoring once again for the Generals in the third inning as he singled home J.D. Stinnett to give the Generals a 5-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, Stinnett lifted a sacrifice fly into right field to score Jacob Hubert to make it 6-2 in favor of the Generals.
After going 0-for-3 in his first three plate appearances of the game, Drew Featherston launched his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning, to make the score 8-3.
Featherston and Cortina each had three RBI in the game. Frank Cloutier, Jacob Hubert, and J.D. Stinnett each scored two runs for the Generals.
With the win, the Generals improve to 19-17 on the season and 2-4 in the second-half. The Pump Jacks fall to 17-19 overall and 2-4 in the second-half.
The Generals travel to The Woodlands on Saturday to take on the Strykers in the first game of a two-game series at 7:05pm at The Woodlands Christian Academy.
The Generals next home game is Tuesday, July 16. It will be Free Ticket Tuesday presented by City Mortgage Group. All fans will get in for free on Tuesday night thanks to City Mortgage.
