The Victoria Generals lost their fifth straight game on Saturday night 11-2 to the Brazos Valley Bombers at Riverside Stadium. The Bombers scored in all but two innings on the night and piled up 18 hits en route to the victory.
J.P. Clifton took the loss for the Generals as he allowed seven runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Juan Cortina pitched an inning and gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout. Nathan Humpal struck out five in his three innings of action, but allowed three runs on five hits.
Bryce Rutherford contained the Generals offense for most of the night to pick up the win. Rutherford tossed seven innings, allowing just two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts. Caleb Hawkins and Nick Johnson each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
The Generals loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning with no outs and scored a run as Aaron Morgan was hit by a pitch, but the next three batters were retired in order to end the threat.
The Generals other run in the game came in the seventh inning as Nathan Humpal scored on a wild pitch.
Humpal, David Paiz, Romeo Cortina, and J.D. Stinnett each had one hit in the game for the Generals.
With the loss, the Generals fall to 17-16 on the season and 0-3 in the second-half. The Bombers improve to 28-5 overall and 2-1 in the second-half.
The Generals and Bombers will meet again on Sunday night for game two of the series at 7:05pm at Riverside Stadium in Victoria. It will be the final game before the All-Star break for both teams.
