With the Victoria Generals trailing 8-5 in the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded and two outs, Romeo Cortina sent a towering fly ball deep into left field for what looked to be a walk-off grand slam, but it came up just short as the Acadiana Cane Cutter’s left fielder Jordie Hein made the catch on the warning track to end the game.
The Generals entered the ninth inning trailing 8-3. David Paiz, Jr. led off with a double and came into score on Jordan Camel’s RBI single. Frank Cloutier scored later in the inning on a Drew Featherston ground out to make it an 8-5 game.
The Cane Cutters got off to a hot start in the game off of Generals starting pitcher Daniel Tunchez, Jr. The first four batters of the game for the Cane Cutters all recorded hits and scored before the first out of the game was made. The inning was capped by a two-run home run by Logan Taylor.
Tunchez settled in after that and allowed just one more run in the fifth inning. Tunchez struck out five and allowed six hits in his five innings of work, but took the loss.
Kris Looper gave up two runs in the sixth inning and Taylor hit his second home run of the game in the seventh, a solo shot.
The Generals scored two in the bottom of the sixth on a Cortina RBI single to score Featherston and a Paiz RBI single to score Cortina. J.B. Moss made it 8-3 on an RBI single to score J.D. Stinnett in the seventh inning.
Moss, Cortina, Reese, Paiz, and Stinnett all recorded two hits in the game for the Generals.
With the loss, the Generals fall to 17-14 on the season and 0-1 in the second-half. The Cane Cutters improve to 15-16 overall and 1-0 in the second-half.
