Generals End Bombers Home Winning Streak, Win 9-3

The Victoria Generals snapped the Brazos Valley Bombers 12-game home winning streak on Thursday night with a 9-3 win in Bryan. The Generals set a new team record with 10 stolen bases in the game.

The Bombers got out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning as G.R. Hinsley reached second base on an error by Generals starting pitcher Lucas Humpal. Hunter Melton then hit a chopper that bounced over the head of Generals shortstop J.D. Stinnett and into left field for an RBI single.

The Generals grabbed the lead in the fifth inning with two runs in the frame. Drew Featherston led off with a single and advanced to second on an error by the Bombers centerfielder. J.B. Moss then drilled an RBI double to score Featherston to tie the game at 1-1. After a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Hannon, J.D. Stinnett lifted a sacrifice fly into right field to allow Moss to score and give the Generals a 2-1 lead.

The Generals extended their lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning as Featherston hit an RBI double to score Jace Reese and Moss added an RBI single to plate Jacob Hubert.

The Bombers got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a Hinsley RBI groundout to cut the Generals lead to 4-2. Nathan Humpal came on in relief of his brother Lucas with two outs in the inning to get out of a jam. Lucas was credited with the win in the game, tossing 5.2 innings on the night and allowing just two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Brandon Hannon was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to lead off the seventh inning. He stole second and third base to up his TCL leading total to 20 on the season. Hannon would then come into score on an error by the Bombers first baseman to make it 5-2 in favor of the Generals.

The Bombers added a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Jake Henson to make it 5-3, but Hinsley was caught on the base paths to end the inning.

Three straight errors by the Bombers defense allowed Stinnett to come all the way around to score in the ninth. Jordan Camel then added an RBI single to plate Romeo Cortina. Frank Cloutier pinch ran for Camel and stole second base before coming into score on another Bombers error. Later in the inning, David Paiz, Jr. and Featherston executed a double steal to score Paiz and give the Generals a 9-3 lead.

The Generals will led by the bottom three hitters in their lineup on the night. Jacob Hubert went 2-for-5 with a stolen base, Drew Featherston went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs, two RBIs, and a stolen base, and J.B. Moss went 3-for-4 with a double, a run, two RBIs, and a stolen base.

With the win, the Generals improve to 15-10 and the Bombers fall to 21-4.

The Generals will look for the two-game sweep as the two teams meet again on Friday night in Bryan at 7:05pm. The Generals return home on Saturday and Sunday to host the Acadiana Cane Cutters at 7:05pm at Riverside Stadium in Victoria.
