Romeo Cortina went 4-for-4 on Wednesday night with a double and two runs scored.
The Victoria Generals completed a two-game sweep of the Texas Marshals in their first home stand of the 2013 Texas Collegiate League season on Wednesday night with a 6-4 victory. Generals starting pitcher Matt McClain (St. Mary’s) picked up his first win of the season, allowing just three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts over five innings.
The Generals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. After the Generals loaded the bases on three straight singles by David Paiz, Jr. (Texas State), Romeo Cortina (Sam Houston), and Jordan Camel (Stephen F. Austin), Nathan Humpal (St. Mary’s) drew a walk to push across the first run. Jacob Hubert (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) then blasted a bases-clearing double into left-centerfield gap.
The Marshals cut the Generals lead to 4-3 with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth off of McClain, but the Generals would respond with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth to make it 6-4. Camel singled home Cortina before Hubert added his fourth RBI of the game to bring in Camel.
Kyle Keller (Southeastern Louisiana) made his first appearance for the Generals in relief, allowing a single run in two innings of work with two strikeouts. Paiz struck out the side in the eighth and Kaleb Keith (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) notched his second save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Cortina led the Generals at the plate with a 4-for-4 night with a double and two runs scored.
The Generals improved to 5-1 on the season with the victory and the Marshals fell to 2-4.
