Following their sweep of the Woodlands Strykers to start to 2013 Texas Collegiate League season, the Victoria Generals traveled to Lafayette on Saturday to take on the Acadiana Cane Cutters and were handed their first loss of the season by a final score of 8-3.
The Cane Cutters jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly and a throwing error by Generals catcher Aaron Morgan.
The Generals defensive struggles continued in the fifth inning as the first two Cane Cutters reached base on errors by the Generals infield and the third was walked to load the bases. After getting two outs, Generals starting pitcher Trey Wall issued his third walk of the inning to allow a run to score.
More defensive miscues hurt the Generals in the 6th inning. After back-to-back infield singles to start the inning, Generals relief pitcher Chase Angelle fielded a bunt and threw it into right-field, allowing a run to score. The Cane Cutters then got back-to-back RBI singles and another run on a Generals throwing error to make the score 7-0.
The Cane Cutters made it 8-0 in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.
The Generals cut the deficit to 8-3 in the top of the eighth inning on RBI fielder’s choices by Hayden Vesely and David Paiz, Jr. Kyle Thornell was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Trey Wall took the loss for the Generals despite allowing just two hits through five innings. The Generals defense made a total of seven errors in the ballgame.
