Brandon Tierney drove in 3 runs in the Generlas 6-3 win over the Cane Cutters on Sunday night.
The Victoria Generals scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning on Sunday night to come from behind and beat the Acadiana Cane Cutters 6-3 in Lafayette. With the win, the Generals are now just one game back in the Texas Collegiate League standings of the first place East Texas Pump Jacks.
Trailing 3-2 in the top of the ninth, the Generals (now 24-11 on the season) finally got the clutch base hits that had seemed to be alluding them for the past few games. Carter Mangum singled to lead off the inning and moved around to third on a double by Billy Richard. Alex Klonowski then tied the game on an RBI single to right-field. Chad Kruse then stepped in and smacked a single to left-field to give the Generals a 4-3 lead. Brandon Tierney followed with another single for two RBIs to make it a 6-3 game.
The Generals first two runs of the game came in the first inning. After loading the bases on three straight singles to start the game by Richard, Klonowski, and Kruse, Tierney walked and Trace Knoblauch was it by a pitch to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
The Cane Cutters (16-18) made it a 2-1 game on a solo home run by Isaac Rodriguez in the bottom of the first off of Generals starting pitcher Covey Morrow. It was the only run that Morrow would allow as he went six innings, giving up just four hits with three strikeouts.
Jeremy Flores came on in the seventh and allowed two runs, but would pick up the win on the night.
Tanner Green shut the door in the bottom of the ninth to record his fifth save of the season.
Richard, Kruse, and Mangum each had two hits on the night. Tierney added three RBIs.
The two teams will meet again on Monday night in Lafayette for game two of the series at 7:05pm.
