Carter Mangum hit two doubles to help lead the Generals to an 8-3 win over the Aces on Friday night
The Victoria Generals traveled to Alexandria, Louisiana on Friday night and took down the Aces 8-3 in the first game of a two-game series to kick-off the second-half of the Texas Collegiate League season.
The Generals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Billy Richard grounded out to third to score Patrick Duncan who had led off the inning with a single. Andrew Stumph would later single to drive in Carter Mangum.
The Aces got a run back in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Lucas Quary. It would be the only run that Generals starting pitcher Jordan Pacheco would surrender on the night. Pacheco went four innings allowing six hits while striking out three.
The Generals made it 5-1 in the top of the fifth. Stumph led off the inning with a double and was driven home on an RBI triple by Trace Knoblauch. Duncan then drove in Knoblauch on an RBI single. Mangum then stepped to the plate and doubled to drive in Duncan.
Covey Morrow came on in relief of Pacheco and allowed just two runs across the final five innings of play to pick up the win. Morrow stuck out two and allowed five hits to move to 5-1 on the season. His five wins tie him for the league lead.
The Generals tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the ninth. After two quick outs, Trent Wagner and Duncan hit back-to-back singles. Mangum then drilled his second double of the game to score Wagner and Duncan. Mangum would come around to score on an RBI triple by Billy Richard to make the final score 8-3.
Mangum led the Generals at the plate going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs, and two runs scored.
The Generals improved to 1-0 in the second-half and 20-9 overall. The Aces fell to 1-1 in the second-half and 13-19 overall.
The Generals and Aces will play game two of the series on Saturday night in Alexandria at 7:05pm.
