The Victoria Generals won their second game to start the 2012 season as they pounded out 15 hits on their way to defeating the Acadiana Cane Cutters 9-3 on Saturday night in Lafayette. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi right-hander Bryce Zak picked up his first win of the season for the Generals pitching five innings and allowing just three runs on six hits with one strikeout. Every offensive starter had at least one hit on the night for the Generals.
The Cane Cutters jumped out to an early 3-0 lead through three innings of play before the Generals scored nine unanswered runs. The Generals got on the board in the fourth inning after Trent Wagner led off with a double, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on an RBI single by Alex Klonowski.
The Generals then scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Hayden Vesely scored on a wild pitch, Blue Hybner scored on an RBI single by Chad Kruse, and Kruse scored on an RBI single by Jude Vidrine.
The Generals put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth inning with five runs in the frame. Wagner scored on an error by the pitcher to get the scoring started. Vidrine and Alex Klonowski scored on back-to back bases loaded walks by Hybner and Carter Mangum. Kruse then drilled a two-run double to score Hybner and and Kevin Daniels.
Corey Holmes and Alex Klonowski each threw two innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts apiece.
The Generals moved to 2-0 on the season as the Cane Cutters fell to 1-1.
The Generals now return home for the 2012 home opener at Riverside Stadium tomorrow night, Sunday, June 3 at 7:05pm against the Cane Cutters. Magnet schedules will be given away to the first 1,000 fans in attendance courtesy of Mr. Payroll Cash Checking.
