Bryan, Texas - In the 2011 Cricket Wireless TCL All-Star Game, the South defeated the North by a final score of 7-4.
The Victoria Generals, Acadiana Cane Cutters, and Brazos Valley Bombers represented the South squad while the East Texas Pump Jacks, Alexandria Aces, and Coppell Copperheads represented the North.
The Generals had six representatives in the game: Freddy Villalobos, Chad Kruse, Trent Wagner, John Longoria, Covey Morrow, and Ross Goebel.
Freddy Villalobos and Trent Wagner represented the Generals in the home run derby prior to the game. Trent Wagner hit one home run in the opening round which put him up against the Copperheads Nick Smelser in the finals. Wagner and Smelser each hit two home runs in the final round, so they moved to a five-out swing off which Smelser ended up winning 1-0 to claim the title.
The Generals made their presence felt right from the onset of the game as Chad Kruse reached base on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first inning and later scored from second base on a wild pitch. The North's catcher had trouble finding the ball and Kruse hustled all the way from second and dove head first to give the South a 2-0 lead.
Covey Morrow came on to pitch the 2nd and 3rd innings of the ballgame. Morrow allowed one run on two hits while walking one and striking out two.
In the third inning, Freddy Villalobos drove in a run on a fielder's choice and later came around to score on a single to give the South a 4-1 advantage.
Kruse led off the bottom of the fourth inning for the South squad with a single and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Villalobos. It was Villalobos's second RBI of the game which improved the South's lead to 5-1.
The North scored two runs in the sixth to cut the South's lead to 5-3, but the South answered with two more runs in the seventh to stretch the lead to 7-3. In the seventh, Villalobos and Trent Wagner were both hit by a pitch on back-to-back at bats to lead off the inning. Both players eventually came around to score on a single.
The North scored once in the eighth and the South ended up winning the game 7-4.
All in all, the Generals accounted for four of the seven runs scored by the South in the game.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday as they host the Alexandria Aces at 7:05pm at Riverside Stadium in Victoria.
