The Victoria Generals led 7-4 going into the ninth inning on Saturday night and sent their closer, Covey Morrow, into the ballgame to try to preserve a win against the Acadiana Cane Cutters. Morrow allowed two runs in the ninth, but eventually shut the door to notch his seventh save of the season as the Generals won 7-6.
The game remained scoreless until the third inning when the Cane Cutters scored two runs off of starting pitcher Ross Goebel. The Generals defense made two errors in the inning to lead to the two unearned runs.
Goebel would end up throwing six strong innings for the Generals on the night, allowing three runs, none of which were earned, on just two hits to pick up his fourth win of the season.
The Generals responded in the bottom half of the third inning with five runs of their own. Michael McGraw had an RBI single to score Trent Wagner who had walked earlier in the inning. John Longoria then drove in McGraw and Freddy Villalobos on a two-run single. Later in the inning, Ryan Dalton delivered a two-run double that scored both Grayson Porter and Longoria.
In the bottom of the fourth, Wagner led off the inning with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly by McGraw.
The Cane Cutters scored single runs in the fourth and seventh innings to cut the Generals lead to 6-4.
The Generals added a much needed insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Chad Kruse scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-4. The Generals would then hold on in the ninth inning for the 7-6 victory.
Wagner led the Generals at the plate, going 2 for 3 on the night with a double, a triple, two walks, and two runs scored. Porter had three hits on the night for the Generals as well.
The Generals improved to 15-18 on the season and 3-1 in the second-half. The Cane Cutters fell to 16-15 overall and 1-3 in the second-half.
The Generals have Sunday off before hosting the Coppell Copperheads at home at Riverside Stadium on Monday and Tuesday nights. Both games will be at 7:05pm.
