Blake Denman struck out a season-high 10 batters and picked up his 3rd win of the season!
The Victoria Generals traveled to Kilgore, TX on Wednesday night totake on the first-place team in the Texas Collegiate League, the East TexasPump Jacks. The Generals came away witha 6-3 win behind a great outing by starting pitcher Blake Denman. Denman pitched 6.2 innings on the night,allowing no runs on just three hits while striking out a season high 10batters.
The Generals got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Trent Wagner singled, stole second base, andcame around to score after the Pump Jacks catcher threw a ball away trying tothrow out Wagner stealing third.
The Generals broke the game open in the fifth inning by scoring fiveruns in the frame to take a 6-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Michael McGraw hit a ground ball to the thirdbaseman whose throw to first pulled the first baseman off of the bag whichallowed Freddy Villalobos and Ryan Dalton, both of which had singled earlier inthe inning, to come around to score. Later in the inning, Wagner drove a double over the centerfielder’s headto score McGraw and Chad Kruse. Wagnerwould then score on an RBI single by Conner Mach.
Denver Diefenbach allowed three runs on three hits while walking twobatters in the eighth inning. PhillipGarcia came on in relief and got a big fly out with the bases loaded to get outof a jam.
Garcia came back out in the ninth inning and quickly got two outs. He then allowed back-to-back singles whichprompted Generals head coach Ryan Wagner to call on his closer, Covey Morrow,to enter the ballgame. Covey induced afly ball out to right field to seal his fifth save of the season.
The Generals improved to 12-13 on the season as the Pump Jacks fell to15-10, but still remain in first place in the TCL standings.
The Generals and Pump Jacks will play game two of the series onThursday night in Kilgore before returning to Victoria on Friday and Saturdaynight for two more games against each other.
