Wagner hits for cycle as Generals win 8-7 Victoria General’s outfielder Trent Wagner hit for the cycle on Friday night to help the Generals defeat the Brazos Valley Bombers 8-7. Wagner went 4-for-5 on the night with a run scored and six RBIs.
Wagner's first hit of the game came in the first inning on a two-run triple that was drilled to the gap in left-centerfield. With the bases loaded in the second inning, Wagner delivered a double into the same left-centerfield gap to clear the bases. In the fourth inning, Wagner launched his first home run of the season, a solo shot that was launched down the right field line. A single shy of the cycle, Wagner struck out swinging, in the seventh inning, but got a second chance in the ninth and delivered. With the game tied at 7-7, Wagner smacked a single back up the middle just beyond the reach of the shortstop and into centerfield to complete the cycle.
Two batters later, designated hitter Brad Shankle delivered the game winning hit to break the tie and give the Generals the 8-7 win. Phillip Garcia picked up his second win of the season in relief.
Generals starting pitcher Ross Goebel had another solid outing, allowing only five runs in seven innings while striking out three.
The Generals move to 5-4 on the season as the Bombers fall to 1-8.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night for game two of the series at 7:05pm at Riverside Stadium. Friday night will be Little League Night at the Generals game. All little leaguers in uniform will get in for free!
