The Victoria Generals lost to the Acadiana Cane Cutters 5-0 on Friday night in Lafayette, Louisiana. It was the Cane Cutters first home game in franchise history. The game had the makings of a pitcher’s duel early on as Tony Manville of the Generals and Matt Hicks of the Cane Cutters both seemed to be on cruise control early in the ball game.
Hicks threw a complete game shutout, scattering five hits while striking out two batters on the night to pick up the win for the Cane Cutters. The Cane Cutters took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Grant Dozar got things going for the Cane Cutters with a single, then advanced to third after a hit batsmen and a walk. Jacob Derouen then grounded out to second base to plate Dozar.
The score stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the eighth inning. Brett Thornhill and Nick Jones had back-to-back singles to start the inning before an error by Generals shortstop Kevin Phillips allowed Thornhill to score. Sam Hansen then came on for the Generals in relief of Manville and gave up a two-run triple to Dozer. Dozer later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-0.
Chad Kruse, Freddy Villalobos, Brad Shankle, Kevin Phillips, and Daniel Garcia each had a hit apiece for the Generals on the night.
The Generals fell to 1-2 on the season as the Cane Cutters improved to 2-1.
