Cory Hunt - University of Utah
The defending Texas Collegiate League champions, the Victoria Generals, have solidified their opening day roster for the 2011 summer season.
The Generals have added two new players to round out their final additions before opening day this Wednesday, June 1.
“We’re excited about the new group of guys that we having coming in to play for us this summer,” stated Blake Koch, Victoria’s general manager. “We have a lot of new faces this summer and it’s going to be fun to watch them gel together as a team.”
The first of the two newest additions is freshman infielder Cory Hunt from the University of Utah. Hunt, a native of Salt Lake City, was a two-time all-state performer at Jordan High School. Hunt finished his senior year batting .453 with a .598 on-base percentage to go along with 11 doubles. He earned the JHS Outstanding Student-Athlete Award his senior year.
“Cory is a very athletic kid that can play multiple positions on the diamond,” commented Koch. “His speed and versatility will be a big asset for our team this summer.”
Helping out with the catching duties this summer will be Tehlequah, Oklahoma native, Brad Shankle. Shankle, a junior at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, was recently named First-Team All-Conference in the Lone Star Conference after hitting .298 on the season. Shankle recorded nine doubles, eight home runs, 32 runs scored, and 35 RBIs on the year.
As a sophomore at Southeastern, Shankle hit .246 with seven doubles, one triple, four home runs, and 20 RBIs.
“Brad is a solid defensive catcher behind the plate and can provide some pop on the offensive side as well,” commented Koch. “Brad gives our pitching staff a veteran’s presence behind the plate that knows how to handle big game situations.”
The Generals open the 2011 season at home on June 1 against the East Texas Pump Jacks. Game time is 7:05pm at Riverside Stadium.
