The Victoria Generals won the opening game of the best-of-three divisional round of the 2010 TCL playoffs over the Texas Tomcats on Tuesday night by a final score of 8-0. General's starting pitcher Michael Oros was solid on the mound, only allowing one hit and striking out five. Ryan Turner pitched the final three innings, only allowing one hit while striking out two to pick up the save. The only two hits for the Tomcats were a single by Eric Garcia in the top of the first and a double by Nick DeSantiago in the top of the eighth. The two hits came over two and a half hours apart. In the meantime, the General's offense racked up eight runs on 15 hits and were helped by three critical errors by the Tomcats defense.
The Generals go on the board in the top of the third inning when Lawton Langford delivered a triple to center field. Tomcat's shortstop Scott Pasket tried to throw Langford out at third on the relay throw, but his throw sailed over the third base side fence, and Langford was awarded home plate to score the first run of the game. The game remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh inning when the Generals added two more unearned runs. Jeramie Marek singled and later scored on an RBI double by Brendan McGaheran. McGaheran then scored on an RBI single by Mark Hudson. The Generals scored two more in the top of the eighth. After a double by Torrey Jacoby, Marek drove him home on a triple. Langford then delivered an RBI single to plate Jacoby. In the top of the ninth, the Generals scored three more times. Conner Mach singled and was driven home on a double by Jacoby. Abel Baker then delivered an RBI single and came all the way around to score on an error by the Tomcat's catcher.
The Generals are now one win away from advancing to the TCL Championship for the second straight season. The Generals reached the championship last season but were defeated by the Coppell Copperheads. Game two of the series is on Wednesday night in Victoria. Game time is 7:05pm at Riverside Stadium. If needed, game three will be on Thursday night in Victoria as well. Tickets are on sale for the General's home playoff games.
