RE: Kenworthy agrees to play for Victoria
(Victoria, Tx) The Victoria Generals' infield solidified today, as Joey Kenworthy from Texas Tech agreed to accept Chris Clemons' invitation.
Coach Clemons was pleased with his latest 'home run'.
"Having coached against Joey while I was at Baylor, he stood out as a young man that played the game the right way. He gave 100% all the time. As a pitching coach, he was the guy I did not want my guys to face with runners on base. Joey always seemed to come up with a big hit. I am very excited to get to work with him."
Kenworthy was one of just four players to start and play all 55 games for Tech last season with 45 of those starts coming at third base. He ended the year as the team's fourth best hitter with a .313 batting average and an on-base percentage of .431 ... logged 13 doubles along with one triple and two home runs ... was second on the team with 20 multiple-hit games ... posted a season-long nine game hit streak ... IN BIG 12 PLAY ... was the third leading hitter in conference play in 2008 as he finished the Big 12 slate with a .317 average ... nine of his 13 doubles on the season came against Big 12 pitching ... committed just one error during league play ... notched a season-high three RBIs against New Mexico on March 11 ... three days later he hit his first career home run against Texas A&M at Olsen Field in College Station ... tallied three-hit games against New Mexico on April 8, Kansas on April 11 and Oklahoma State on May 11.
Kenworthy graduated from Houston's Cypress Falls High School on May 27, 2006 where he lettered in both baseball and football. Joey helped lead his team to the regional semifinals his sophomore and junior seasons - he hit .409 as a junior in 88 at-bats and drew 16 walks but missed his senior season due to injury.
According to Brad Haynes, VP Baseball Operations, "Mr. Kenworthy is another of the tremendous character guys that Chris insists on bringing to this organization. Joey is known throughout the Big 12 as a young man that genuinely has a handle on life." Haynes went on to to explain that not only was this a good thing for The Victoria Generals, but The Texas Collegiate League just got a reputation bump as well. "The other teams in the league work hard everyday to elevate the league's status nationwide, and when we sign someone like Joey Kenworthy, that is noted outside the region."
The Generals summer season begins June 5th. Interested fans can learn more at: www.victoriagenerals.com
