James Hipp - Victoria Generals
The Victoria Generals have announced that former player James Hipp will return this summer as the team’s assistant coach. Hipp played for the Generals during their inaugural season in the Texas Collegiate League last summer as one of the team’s starting outfielders.
“We’re excited to have James back with our organization in Victoria this summer,” said Blake Koch, the team’s general manager. “James was a big part of our success last year and he’s excited to take on this new chapter in his life as he makes the transition from player to coach.”
Hipp just completed his senior season at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. He finished the season with a team leading .378 batting average. Hipp had 88 hits on the season with 11 doubles, two triples, four homeruns, and 42 RBIs.
Hipp played his prep ball at Uvalde High School where he was a three-time All-State honoree and was selected to the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Team.
After high school, Hipp was signed by Chris Clemons, the General’s head coach, to attend McLennan Community College. At McLennan, Hipp was a two-time North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference All-Conference selection. Hipp hit .339 with 42 RBI as a sophomore and was named to the 2007 Texas-New Mexico Junior College All-Star Game. Hipp was also named Best Male Athlete at McLennan following his sophomore season.
“Chris wanted to fill the assistant coaching position with someone that he was familiar with and someone that he knew would mesh well with his coaching style,” Koch continued. “I know that our organization and all of our players will benefit from having Hipp’s experience and knowledge of the game at our disposal this summer.”
Following his playing days at McLennan, Hipp transferred to Liberty University in Virginia where he appeared in 18 games off the bench, hitting .273 with 5 runs scored. Hipp then moved on to finish his career at St. Mary’s.
The Victoria Generals begin their second season in the Texas Collegiate League on June 1 against the Texas Tomcats at Riverside Stadium in Victoria at 7:05pm. Season tickets are on sale and can be bought online at
