Generals Close Regular Season With 3-2 Win Over Cane Cutters
July 29, 2023 – The Victoria Generals wrapped up regular season play with a 3-2 victory over the Acadiana Cane Cutters at Fabacher Field in Youngsville, Louisiana. Victoria enters the playoffs with the best regular season record in team history at 32-15 and seven wins in a row.
Houston LHP Bryson Walker opened the ballgame with four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and four walks with eight strikeouts. Huston-Tillotson RHP Seve Medrano worked a scoreless frame before Angelina College RHP Trace Sanchez and Murray State College LHP Ryan Dugas each gave up a run in one inning. UTSA RHP Cole Brady and Weatherford College LHP Cody Morse closed out the game with one scoreless inning each. The Generals’ pitching staff totaled 13 punchouts as Walker was credited with the win.
Six Generals picked up a hit, with Nicholls State 3B Gerardo Villarreal and Murray State College 1B Gage Gilchrist knocking in a run in the process. Kalamazoo College LF Robert Newland drew three walks and tallied an RBI while stealing two bases. Western Oklahoma State RF Derek Cerda and Texas State CF Damien Whitfield both collected a hit, a walk and stole a base.
Victoria took a 2-0 lead in the third inning behind an RBI fielder’s choice by Newland and an RBI single by Gilchrist. The lead grew to 3-0 in the fifth on an Acadiana error. The Cane Cutters plated a run on a wild pitch in the sixth before bringing the score within one with an RBI sacrifice fly in the seventh.
The Generals kick off the playoffs on the road against the Seguin River Monsters on Tuesday, August 1, at “Smokey” Joe Williams Field. First pitch of Game 1 of the best-of-3 series is set for 7:05 p.m.
