Generals Collect 12 Hits in 7-2 Win Over Cane Cutters
July 27, 2023 – The Victoria Generals’ middle infield tallied six of the team’s 12 hits in a 7-2 triumph over the Acadiana Cane Cutters at Riverside Stadium. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2B Drake Kerr and McNeese State SS Easton Dowell had three hits each as Victoria took advantage of five Acadiana errors to improve to 31-15.
Kerr led the way with four runs scored, a run batted in, three stolen bases and a walk along with two doubles. Dowell picked up a triple and scored a run as well. Southeastern CF Cristopher Munoz went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs while swiping two bags, and Incarnate Word LF Rey Mendoza notched a hit and an RBI while stealing a base and drawing three walks. Western Oklahoma State RF Derek Cerda stole two bases with one hit.
A&M-Corpus Christi RHP Kody Gibbs earned the win with one earned run and one unearned run in 3.1 innings on two hits and four walks with two strikeouts. The bullpen held the Cane Cutters scoreless as Huston-Tillotson RHP Seve Medrano pitched 0.2 frames before UTSA RHP Cole Brady and Blinn College RHP Blane Zeplin each worked an inning.
Weatherford College LHP Cody Morse added 1.1 innings with a strikeout and A&M-Corpus Christi RHP Austin Dean picked up two punchouts in the final 1.2 frames.
Acadiana got the scoring going two batters into the first inning with an RBI groundout. Victoria responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame on Perez’s RBI sacrifice fly and a throwing error by the Cane Cutters. Acadiana knotted the score in the third with a run on a Victoria throwing error, but the Generals picked up a lead they wouldn’t lose in the home half of the inning with Mendoza’s RBI groundout.
Dowell led off the fourth with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Kerr, who later crossed the plate on a throwing error and made it a 5-2 game. Kerr laced a double to begin the bottom of the sixth and came home on a passed ball. He scored his fourth run of the game on a bases-loaded walk by Kalamazoo College 1B Robert Newland.
Victoria and Acadiana close out the regular season with a rematch on Saturday, July 29, at Fabacher Field in Youngsville, Louisiana. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
