Generals Clinch Best Regular Season Record With 9-5 Win Over Bombers
July 23, 2023 – The first place Victoria Generals played against the second place Brazos Valley Bombers with the Generals winning with a final score 9-5. The Generals’ offense continued to roll, winning their fourth straight game. In addition, they earned the best record in the Texas Collegiate League meaning that the Generals will host the championship game August 5 at Riverside Stadium if advancing in the playoffs.
On the mound for the Generals was Galveston College LHP RJ Patrick who picked up the win pitching five innings allowing two runs off three hits while walking six and striking out four. In relief of Patrick was Texas State RHP Jonathan Martinez who would throw two innings allowing no hits but would be charged with two runs throwing four strikeouts. Blinn College RHP Blane Zeplin would enter the game where he would pitch one inning allowing no hits, recording one strikeout. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi RHP Austin Dean would finish the game pitching one inning allowing one earned run off one hit with two strikeouts.
The Generals’ offense would score two runs in the third and fourth innings. In the fifth, the Bombers would score one run but the Generals would follow-up by adding one of its own runs. In the sixth, the Bombers would score one more run to the scoreboard before three runs would come around to score for the Generals. The final two runs scored for the Bombers would be in the seventh before the Generals would add one run to its lead in the eighth inning.
In the third inning, McNeese State SS Easton Dowell would reach base by hitting a double. Dowell would come around to score after an error by the Bombers. Texas A&M Corpus-Christi 2B Drake Kerr would then draw a walk allowing Texas State DH Xavier Perez to hit an RBI single, scoring Kerr. In the fourth, Western Oklahoma State RF Derec Cerda would drive in the first run in the fourth with an RBI triple scoring Incarnate Word LF Rey Mendoza. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi C Jared Harris would then hit an RBI fielder’s choice, scoring Cerda.
In the fifth, New Mexico 1B Reed Spenrath drew a walk allowing Perez to hit an RBI triple, scoring Spenrath. In the sixth, Cerda would have a double, Gerrado Villareal would have a single, and Dowell would have a walk. Cerda would steal home, scoring a run bringing Kerr to the plate. Kerr along with Spenrath would have RBI walks scoring two runs. In the eighth inning, Kerr would score off a wild pitch and the Generals offense would carry Victoria to another win.
The Victoria Generals will be back in action Wednesday, July 26 at Riverside Stadium against the Brazos Valley Bombers. First pitch will begin at 7:05 p.m.
