Generals Defeat River Monsters 8-6 With Two Late Go-Ahead Runs
July 23, 2023 – The Victoria Generals took on the Seguin River Monsters at Riverside Stadium where the game finished with the Generals pulling out an 8-6 victory after two runs in the bottom of the eighth helped secure the win.
On the mound for the Generals was Texas A&M Corpus Christi RHP Kody Gibbs who threw 5.1 innings allowing three earned runs off four hits with two strikeouts. Murray State Junior College LHP Ryan Dugas would enter the game for 1.2 innings allowing no runs off one hit with two strikeouts. In relief for Dugas was Weatherford College LHP Cody Morse, who pitched 0.2 innings allowing three earned runs off five hits. Kansas Wesleyan RHP KT Gearlds would finish the night and be tonight’s winning pitcher throwing 1.1 innings throwing three strikeouts.
Seguin struck first tonight with one run coming across the plate in the second and third inning to give the River Monsters an early 2-0 lead. Victoria would not find a hit until the bottom of the fifth where they would take a lead. Both teams would exchange runs in the sixth before the River Monsters would tie the game in the eighth. However, the Generals would gather momentum and score the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth and would not look back.
It took the Generals’ offense nearly half the game before getting on the scoreboard but with help from the bats, the Generals would gain energy and in the fourth, Incarnate Word LF Rey Mendoza would draw a walk. Mendoza would eventually make his way around the bases and score after Abilene Christian SS Riley Bender hit a RBI sacrifice fly.
In the fifth, McNeese State 2B Easton Dowell would single to begin the inning. Texas State RF Damien Whitfield would follow up with another single advancing Dowell to third base. The Southeastern Florida CF Christopher Munoz would then hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring Dowell. New Mexico 1B Reed Spenrath and Mendoza would draw walks bringing to the plate Kalamazoo DH Robert Newland who would have an RBI hit by a pitch scoring Whitfield. Later in the inning, Spenrath would score on a wild pitch and Bender would hit an RBI sacrifice fly, scoring Mendoza.
In the bottom of the eighth, Wharton Junior College C Levi Castilleja drew a walk, Whitfield singled, and Munoz hit a go-ahead 2-run single, scoring Castilleja and Whitfield that would cap off the night.
The Victoria Generals will be back in action Tuesday, July 25 for First Responder’s Night presented by DeTar Healthcare System. All first responders and their families will be admitted free with first pitch beginning at 7:05 p.m.
