Generals Defeat Bombers 11-7 in High-Scoring Affair
July 22, 2023 – The Victoria Generals traveled to Edible Field to take on the Brazos Valley Bombers for the fourth time this week and finished on top 11-7. Both the offense and defense for the Generals contributed to give Victoria their third win versus Brazos Valley this week. After the win tonight, the Generals now have an opportunity to win the season series with a chance to host the Texas Collegiate League Championship Game at Riverside Stadium.
On the mound for the Generals was UTSA RHP Braylon Owens who pitched six innings allowing two runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts. Owens would exit the game as Huston Tillotson RHP Seve Medrano would enter the game for 0.1 innings allowing four earned runs off one hit and three walks. Weatherford College RHP Cole Brady would finish the game allowing one earned run off one hit, recording two walks and six strikeouts.
Victoria would score quickly to begin the game with five runs in the first inning. Four more runs in the fourth would give the Generals a 9-0 lead but Brazos Valley would begin to rally back, driving in two runs in the fifth and five more in the seventh. The Victoria pitching staff would finish strong allowing no more runs to score.
In the first inning, Texas State CF Damian Whitfield would single and eventually come around to score due to an error by the Bombers shortstop allowing UT-Arlington 3B Tyce Armstrong to reach on a fielder's choice. New Mexico 1B Reed Spenrath would hammer an RBI double allowing Armstong to score. A RBI double hit by Murray State DH Gage Gilchrist would add to the lead, scoring Spenrath. Then, a 2-run shot by Rey Mendoza would open the game up early.
In the fourth, Abilene Christian SS Riley Bender and McNeese State 2B Easton Dowell would draw walks while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi C Jared Harris got hit by a pitch loading the bases for Western Oklahoma State RF Derec Cerda. A bases-clearing double by Cerda would score three Generals and an Armstrong RBI double would score one more.
In the eighth, two walks would allow Mendoza and Bender to reach base. Dowell would draw another walk and be credited with 2 RBIs due heads up baserunning from Mendoza and Bender after a lack of attention from the Bomber’s defense. Victoria would complete the game with nine hits and one error.
The Generals will be back in action tomorrow night at Riverside Stadium for Bark at the Park presented by Northside Ranch, Pet, and Garden Center. Bring your dog and be admitted FREE! First pitch will begin at 7:05 p.m.
