Generals Suffer 3-2 Walk-Off Loss to Bombers
July 20, 2023 – The Victoria Generals lost to the Brazos Valley Bombers 3-2 in walk-off fashion at Edible Field in Bryan a day after a walk-off win. Both teams traded runs in the tenth inning before Brazos Valley scored in the bottom of the eleventh to sink Victoria to a 25-15 record.
UT-Rio Grande Valley RHP Alex Havlicek allowed just one unearned run on five hits and three walks with nine strikeouts over six innings to start the game. Texas State RHP Jonathan Martinez added a scoreless inning with two punchouts before Blinn College RHP Blane Zeplin worked a scoreless eighth inning with a hit and a strikeout.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi RHP Austin Dean gave up a run over the following two frames with two hits, two walks and a punchout. Weatherford College RHP Cody Morse took the loss after surrendering the winning run with two outs in the eleventh.
Texas State CF Damien Whitfield led the Generals with two hits in the leadoff spot. Mary Hardin-Baylor SS Riley Bender went 1-for-4 with a run batted in and a run scored while McNeese State 2B Easton Dowell knocked in a run as well.
The Bombers got on the board early with a run in the second inning before the Generals knotted the score in the seventh with an RBI double from Bender. Victoria took a brief lead in the top of the tenth on Dowell’s RBI single, but Brazos Valley tied it in the home half of the inning. The Bombers plated the winning run in the eleventh to capture the victory.
The Texas Collegiate League’s top teams are back at it on Friday, July 21, for the third game of the series. First pitch from Riverside Stadium is at 7:05 p.m. It’s Free Ticket Night, presented by ZenWTR.
