Generals Take Down Rougarou 5-2 For 12th-Straight Win

July 10, 2023 – Wharton County Junior College C Levi Castilleja’s 3-run home run powered the Victoria Generals to a 5-2 win over the Baton Rouge Rougarou at Riverside Stadium. Victoria improved to 22-10 with the victory, marking its 12th in a row.

UT-Arlington RHP Jack Hagan improved to 4-1 and lowered his ERA to 2.03 with the win, pitching six innings in which he allowed just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four batters. Galveston College RHP RJ Patrick followed with an inning in which he gave up a run with a hit and a punchout. UTSA RHP Cole Brady added a frame with a strikeout before Weatherford College LHP Cody Morse earned the save with a scoreless ninth.

Castilleja led the way at the plate with three runs batted in, while Kalamazoo College 1B Robert Newland drew three walks and scored two runs. Newland and McNeese State SS Easton Dowell each stole two bases, with the latter tying for the team lead with 13 stolen bags this season. Incarnate Word DH Rey Mendoza drew a walk in his first appearance with the team.

After Southeastern CF Cristopher Munoz and Newland led off the second inning with walks, Castilleja put the Generals on top 3-0 with a 3-run shot to left field. Dowell led off the third with a single and stole two bases before coming home on UT-Arlington 3B Tyce Armstrong’s RBI sacrifice fly.

Baton Rouge plated a run in the fourth on an RBI sacrifice fly, but Victoria added a run in the bottom of the frame as Newland scored on an errant throw by the catcher. The Rougarou scored the final run in the seventh with an RBI double.

Next up, the Generals head to Bryan to take on the second-place Brazos Valley Bombers at Edible Field on Wednesday, July 12, at 7 p.m.
