Generals Winning Streak Continues With 12-11 Win Against Cane Cutters After Late Inning Rally
July 1, 2023 – The Victoria Generals played the Acadiana Cane Cutters for a fourth-straight night and found a way to come back and earn another win, this one by a 12-11 margin. The Generals now move to 17-10 on the season and remain in second place in the Texas Collegiate League.
Starting on the mound for the Generals was Texas A&M-Corpus Christi P Kody Gibbs, pitching three innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits while throwing five strikeouts. Six pitchers in the bullpen threw at least one inning, including Angelina College RHP Trace Sanchez, Huston-Tillotson RHP Seve Medrano, Murray State College LHP Ryan Dugas, Houston LHP Bryson Walker, Texas State RHP Taylor Seay and Kansas Wesleyan RHP KT Gearlds. The pitching staff threw 12 strikeouts and allowed 10 hits in total.
Victoria’s offense began the night scoring one run in the bottom of the first. They would then score three more runs in the second before Acadiana’s offense would put up an eight-spot in the fourth. The Generals fired back with four runs in the fifth, but the Cane Cutters scored again in the seventh with two runs and one in the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, four runs were added to the scoreboard for the Generals helping them pull out a close win.
Offensively for the Generals, St. Thomas C Mason Seay would record three RBIs, A&M-Corpus Christi LF Drake Kerr and New Mexico 3B Reed Spenrath would have two RBIs each, while McNeese State 2B Easton Dowell, UT-Arlington 1B Tyce Armstrong, Texas State CF Damien Whitfield and Murray State College DH Gage Gilchrist joined in with an RBI. Seay had a bases-loaded walk and a 2-run single. Kerr had two doubles, including a 2-run double. Spenrath would hit a 2-run home run and record a bases-loaded walk. Dowell would have an RBI groundout and Armstrong had two hits with a single and RBI double. Whitfield contributed as well with an RBI hit-by-pitch, while Gilchrist had a hit and a bases-loaded walk.
The Generals will be back in action Monday night at Riverside Stadium against the Baton Rouge Rougarou with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
