The Victoria Generals traveled to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to take on the Baton Rouge Rougarou at Pete Goldsby Field, with the Generals winning 9-5 in ten innings. Two games were scheduled this weekend, but Saturday’s game was canceled due to inclement weather.
On the mound for the Generals was Abilene Christian RHP Holt Gibson, who pitched three innings while throwing two strikeouts and allowing an unearned run but no hits or walks. UTSA RHP Braylon Owens would then come into the game for five innings of work, allowing three earned runs on four hits, while striking out five batters. Kansas Wesleyan RHP KT Gearlds got the call from the bullpen to pitch the ninth and tenth innings throwing two strikeouts, while allowing no runs or hits, with two walks.
The Rougarou would score first with a run in the first inning. The Generals’ offense would eventually get its bats going in the top of the fifth inning, driving in two runs. The Rougarou added another run in the bottom of the frame, but the Generals would catch a break in the following inning after a pair of hits and an errant throw by the Baton Rouge catcher on a dropped third strike allowed the Generals to score two runs and take a 4-3 lead.
Later in the action, the Generals would give up their lead to the Rougarou, down 5-4 headed to the ninth inning. The top of the lineup would be up to bat and found a way to tie the game at 5-5 after being down to its last out. After a scoreless bottom of the ninth, the Generals would add four runs in the 10th inning to secure the win.
Notable players in the Generals offense tonight were UT-Arlington 1B Tyce Armstrong, McNeese State 2B Easton Dowell, New Mexico 3B Reed Spenrath, Eastern Oklahoma State LF Drake Kerr and Murray State College DH Gage Gilchrist. In the second inning, Dowell hit an RBI double and Armstrong hit an RBI groundout. In the ninth, Spenrath hit a two-out RBI single to tie the game. Going into the 10th, Kerr would hit an RBI sacrifice bunt that would score Gage Gilchrist who had two singles on the night. Another error by the Rougarou would score Armstrong and score another insurance run.
The Generals will be back in action Monday night at Riverside Stadium against the Seguin River Monsters at 7:05 p.m. It's a free ticket night presented by INVISTA.
