Generals Allow Three Unanswered Runs in 5-4 Loss to Bombers
June 21, 2023 – The Victoria Generals fell to 10-9 this summer with a 5-4 loss to the Brazos Valley Bombers at Riverside Stadium. Victoria overcame an early 2-0 deficit to take a 4-2 lead, but Brazos Valley proceeded to score three unanswered runs, including the go-ahead in the ninth, to pull out the victory.
UTSA RHP Zach Royse started on the mound for the Generals, lasting four innings and allowing two runs on two hits, four walks and two strikeouts. Galveston College RHP RJ Patrick gave up one run on two walks and a punchout in 0.1 frames, while Houston-Victoria LHP Brady Parker surrendered a run on four hits and a strikeout in 1.2 innings. Kansas Wesleyan RHP KT Gearlds issued two scoreless frames with three strikeouts before Houston LHP Bryson Walker allowed one run on a hit and a strikeout in 0.2 innings, earning the loss. Texas State RHP Taylor Seay rounded out the last 0.1 innings with a hit and a walk.
Victoria tallied seven hits, led by McNeese State 2B Easton Dowell with two. The Aransas Pass native also collected an RBI, as did Western Oklahoma State CF Cristopher Munoz and Abilene Christian 3B Riley Bender. Munoz, A&M-Corpus Christi LF Drake Kerr, New Mexico 1B Reed Spenrath and UT-Arlington DH Tyce Armstrong each recorded a hit and scored a run.
The Bombers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with a 2-run home run before the Generals scored their first run in the third on Dowell’s RBI single. Victoria grabbed a 4-2 lead with three runs in the fourth, led off by Munoz’s RBI double. A wild pitch scored another run, and Bender brought in another with an RBI sacrifice fly.
Brazos Valley RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings tied the game at 4-4, and the Bombers grabbed the lead in the ninth with an RBI infield single.
The Generals will get a rematch with the Bombers on Friday, June 23, at Edible Field in Bryan. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
