Strong Pitching Guides Generals to 5-2 Win Over Rougarou
June 5, 2023 – The Victoria Generals’ pitching staff held the Baton Rouge Rougarou to just two runs on four hits while the Generals tallied seven hits to pick up a 5-2 victory at Riverside Stadium. Victoria put up a four-spot in the second inning to grab a lead it wouldn’t relinquish for the rest of the night while Baton Rouge was held in check at the plate.
UTSA RHP Braylon Owens got the starting nod for the Generals, going four scoreless innings with three hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Houston LHP Bryson Walker relieved him for 1.2 frames, giving up an unearned run with a hit, two walks and five punchouts. Kansas Wesleyan RHP KT Gearlds closed the final 3.1 innings with a run and seven strikeouts.
UT-Rio Grande Valley SS Kade York notched two hits and knocked in two runs to pace the Generals’ bats. Through three games this summer, he’s batting .500. New Mexico 1B Reed Spenrath complemented him with a 2-for-3 performance with a walk and two runs. That included a solo home run to right-center field in the fifth inning that marked Victoria’s first long ball of the season. Bossier Parish Community College C Luke George had a 1-for-3 night while scoring a run and picking up an RBI.
Victoria got on the board first with a big second inning. Spenrath led off with a walk before Abilene Christian 3B Riley Bender singled. San Jacinto Junior College RF Brady Christensen’s RBI groundout pushed the first run across, and an RBI single from George brought home another runner. Two batters later, McNeese State DH Easton Dowell singled to plate a run, and York followed him with an RBI single of his own to put the Generals up 4-0 early on.
The Rougarou chipped into the lead in the fifth with an RBI groundout, but Spenrath and the Generals answered right back with his solo shot. Baton Rouge picked up the game’s final run via a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Victoria is back in action on Tuesday, June 6, to take on the Seguin River Monsters, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. It’s Educators Night at Riverside Stadium, presented by Whataburger.
