Generals Capture 3-2 Come-From-Behind Win in Home Opener
June 4, 2023 – The Victoria Generals scored three runs in the eighth inning to pick up a 3-2 comeback victory over the Baton Rouge Rougarou at Riverside Stadium. The Rougarou held a 2-0 lead after the third inning as both teams’ pitching staffs coasted through the opposing lineups until Murray State Junior College DH Gage Gilchrist’s 2-RBI double tied the game. Two batters later, Western Oklahoma State LF Cristopher Nunez singled, but a throwing error allowed Eastern Oklahoma State PR Bryce Logan to race home and score the go-ahead run.
Sunday served as the Generals’ home opener and Free Ticket Night, presented by Texas Roadhouse. With the victory, Victoria picked up its first win of season to improve to 1-3, while Baton Rouge fell to 3-2.
Southwestern LHP JJ Slack started on the mound for Victoria, allowing two runs over 5.2 innings on six hits, three walks and six strikeouts. Abilene Christian RHP Holt Gibson relieved him with 2.1 scoreless frames with four strikeouts and just one hit. Angelina College RHP Taylor Seay earned the win with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to close things out.
Each team tallied seven hits while the Generals committed one error. Munoz and UT-Rio Grande Valley SS Kade York collected two hits each and Gilchrist had a pair of runs batted in.
The Rougarou scored in the second and third innings to grab an early 2-0 lead as Victoria went down in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. York opened the eighth with a single before Western Oklahoma State RF Derek Cerda doubled to put the pair in scoring position. Gilchrist then hit a liner to right field that went in and out of the sliding outfielder’s glove before dropping for a double. With two outs, Munoz’s single and the error put the Generals on top 3-2.
Victoria is back in action on Monday, June 5, at Riverside Stadium to take on Baton Rouge, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
