Generals Defeat the River Monsters in Final Regular Season Game
July 30, 2022- The Generals played game three of the three-game series tonight in Riverside Stadium against the Seguin River Monsters. The River Monsters took game two last night in Seguin to even out the series, but the Generals looked to end the regular season on a good note with a dominant win against the River Monsters before playoffs next week.
Malachi Lott started off the game on the mound for the Generals. The bats for the River Monsters were hot in the top of the first as they had bases loaded with two outs, but Lott got the Generals out of that inning unharmed as they stepped up to the plate and could not take the lead as they left a Isaiah Walker, the Generals shortstop, stranded on third. The Generals took the lead 1-0 in the bottom of the second off of an RBI single from left fielder Brandon Galindo.
The Generals made a pitching change in the top of the third to Jared Barta, who threw one strikeout, allowed no earned runs or hits through one inning pitched as the River Monsters would go down in order. Generals would extend their lead in the bottom of the third as Reed Spenrath would hit a double and shortly steal third and be in scoring position for the Generals. Blake Bean got walked on ball four due to a wild pitch that would bring in Spenrath to extend the Generals lead 2-0. River Monsters responded in the top of the fourth scoring a couple runs to tie the game 2-2.
With a tie ball game, the Generals knew they had to take the lead to set the tone for the rest of the game and they did just that as Chase Sanguanetti hit a 2-run RBI single to help the Generals take the lead 4-2. Chris Kean came into this game in the top of the fifth and struck out the side in order and sent the River Monsters swimming back to the dugout. The bats stayed hot for the Generals as Jackson Hardy hit an RBI single to extend the Generals lead 5-2 through five innings played.
The Generals did not stop there as in the bottom of the sixth with bases loaded due to a few walks, the Generals added another run to their lead to make the score 6-2. Will Duncan came into the game in the top of the seventh after Kean pitched two solid innings for the Generals throwing four strikeouts and only allowing one hit and no earned runs. River Monsters did score one run in the top of the eighth which decreased the Generals lead as they previously had been scoreless for three straight innings as they tried to come back into this ball game.
Despite an offensive effort from the River Monsters in the top of the ninth, it would not be enough as the Generals defense was on top of it tonight as Austin Dean helped close out this game handing out three strikeouts, and allowing one hit and no earned runs. The Generals had six pitchers make appearances on the mound which helped them defeat the River Monsters 7-3 along with some hot bats.
The Generals will be back in action Tuesday night at Riverside Stadium as they take on the Brazos Valley Bombers in a best 2-3 series to start the playoffs. It will be a Free Ticket Night presented by Bobcat of Victoria. First pitch will be thrown at 7:05 p.m.
