Generals Winning Streak Comes to an End in Baton Rouge
July 21, 2022- The Generals faced off against the Baton Rouge Rougarou on the road in game one of a two game series. This was the Generals third straight road game as they look to continue their hot start in the second half of the TCL season.
The Generals found themselves down early in this game, as following a scoreless top of the first, the Rougarou brought home three runs to give themselves the lead. The Generals looked to answer back in the top of the second, however the offense was not clicking, and the batters were retired in order. The Rougarou were able to extend their lead in the second with another three-run inning, giving them a six-run lead heading into the third.
The bats continued to stay silent for the Generals, as they could only collect one hit in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. However, the pitching and defense improved as starting pitcher Michael Barta bounced back following the tough first two innings and retired nine straight batters, allowing no base runners from the third inning through the fifth.
The Generals offense woke up in the sixth inning, as Angel Mendoza hit a leadoff single and Bryce Jewell also got on base due to a walk. This set up a two RBI double from Adam Becker, which cut the Rougarou lead down to just four. However, the Rougarou were able to respond in the bottom of the sixth as they scored two runs of their own, bringing the score to 8-2.
Looking to cut into the deficit once again, the Generals were able to get two baserunners on in the top of the seventh. However, they were not able to cash in on this opportunity and the score remained the same. Pitcher JJ Slack came into the game in the bottom of the seventh trying to keep the Rougarou from extending their lead. He found himself in a jam, as the home team had the bases loaded with just one out. However, he was able to strike out a batter and cause the next to pop out, keeping the Rougarou off the board in the bottom of the seventh.
The Generals offensive struggles continued in the eighth, as they were unable to muster any hits. The Rougarou rallies in the bottom of the inning, scoring four more runs and making it 12-2. This will end up being the final as the Generals were unable to get any runs across in the final inning of this ballgame. This brings the Generals record to 11-2-1 in the second half of the TCL season.
The Generals will be back in action tomorrow night for game two of a two game series as they take on the Baton Rouge Rougarou on the road. First pitch will be at 7:00 PM.
