Generals Late Offense Scores Another Win!
July 18, 2022 – Generals are finishing a quick home stand against the Baton Rouge Rougarou before taking off to the road. Generals look to continue their hot performance in the second half of the season.
The first five innings would go down as a pitching duel between the two starters. Generals pitcher, Travis Phelps, would have five strikeouts and the Rougarou pitcher, Chris Tonna, would only allow three baserunners in those five innings.
Generals infield played great defense getting lineouts and runners out on bases as three baserunners would be thrown out to help keep the game scoreless through five innings after a few walks from Phelps.
After Phelps gave up a leadoff single and a walk in the top of the sixth, the Generals made a pitching change to Cole Payne. Rougarou would get a hit off Payne from Monray Van Der Walt bringing home the runner from second to score the game's first run. Sam Plash would hit another single that would load the bases for the Rougarou with one out in the inning. Cameron Yaden would be struckout bringing up Brayden Caskey who would see a wild pitch bringing home the second run of the inning. Caskey would be struckout to end the inning. Phelp’s night would end with five innings, five strikeouts, five walks, two hits, and two earned runs.
The Generals would strike back in the bottom of the sixth after a leadoff walk from Bryce Jewell followed by a single from Jackson Hardy, Malachi Lott would reach on a fielder's choice. Adam Becker would take the plate hitting the ball into left field bringing home Jewell. With two outs, Reed Spenrath would hit the ball deep into center field bringing home both Hardy and Lott getting a two RBI triple to give the Generals a 3-2 after the sixth inning.
The Rougarou would answer in the top of the seventh after a leadoff walk from Derrald Moore. Moore would steal second and advance to third on a sacrifice fly. Landry Wilkerson would hit a single bringing home Moore to tie the game. Brennan Lambert would take the bat and hit a single advancing Wilkerson to third. After Adrian Minjares threw to second base trying to throw out a runner, Wilkerson would advance home to take a 4-3 lead for the Rougarou.
The Rougarou would make a pitching change in the bottom of the seventh to Hayden Oglesby ending Tonna’s night at six innings, one strikeout, three walks, four hits, three runs, and two earned runs.
In the top of the eighth, the Generals made a pitching change to J.J. Slack ended Payne’s night with two innings, three strikeouts, one walk, four hits, and two earned runs.
The Generals would get the offense going again in the bottom of the eighth after a leadoff double from Becker followed by another double from Chase Sanguinetti to bring home Becker to tie the game at four with no outs in the inning. After striking out Spenrath, the Rougarou would make a pitching change to Deonte Dotson. Dotson would hit the first two batters he faced to load the bases for Minjares with one out. Minjares would get a full count walk to bring home the run from third to take the lead with bases still loaded for pinch hitter Cameron Nickens. Nickens would hit a single to bring home another run for the Generals, Minjares would be thrown out at second. Hardy drew another walk to get the bases loaded once again for the Generals bringing up Lott who would strikeout to end the inning taking a 6-4 lead heading into the top of the ninth.
Generals kept J.J. Slack on the mound to finish the game as the Generals pick up another win 6-4. Generals are now 9-1–1 in the second half of the season.
The Generals will have a five game road stretch starting tomorrow night against the Bombers and ending on Saturday against the Bombers. Generals next home game will be on July 26 against the Acadiana Cane Cutters on Free Ticket Night presented by Sodalis Victoria Assisted Living.
