Generals Dominate to Collect their Fifth Straight Win

Austin Marlin collected four hits in five at bats, as the Victoria Generals defeated the San Antonio River Monsters 20-6 on Sunday at Riverside Stadium. Marlin hit a three run home run to left field in the fourth inning, singled in the third inning, singled in the sixth inning, and singled again in the seventh inning.

The River Monsters got on the board in the top of the first inning after Eric Bacon grounded into a fielder’s choice, and Juan Garcia singled down the right field line, each scoring one run.

The Generals tied the game up in the bottom of the first thanks to two ground outs. The Generals tied the game at two on a ground out by Marlin as Jeter Battles and Caden Callaway would score in the inning.

A home run to left field by Graham Charboneau gave the Generals the lead, 5-3, in the bottom of the second.

The River Monsters jumped back into the lead in the top of the third inning after Sammy Morales walked, Roman Trinidad grounded out, and the River Monsters scored on a wild pitch.

Asa Sampson singled down the left field line, helping the Generals tie the game at six in the bottom of the third.

The Generals dominated the rest of the game beginning in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on one hit to take the lead, 11-6. The biggest blow in the inning was an error that drove in two.

The Generals scored six runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. An error scored one run, Sampson singled, scoring one run, Bryce Speakman singled, scoring one run, and Charboneau doubled, scoring three runs.

Xavier Woods earned the win for the Generals. The reliever surrendered one hit and zero runs over two and one-third innings, striking out five and walking one. MJ Espinoza took the loss for the River Monsters. The hurler went three innings, surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on six hits, striking out one and walking three.

Caden Robertson led things off on the hill for the Generals. The hurler gave up five hits and three runs over two innings, striking out none and walking none. Clark Scallon and Jacob Janak, each threw shutout innings for the Generals in relief.

Victoria Generals accumulated 15 hits in the game. Charboneau, the number nine hitter for Victoria Generals, led the way with six runs batted in. The right fielder went 2-for-3 on the day. Speakman, Sampson, and Caden Callaway each collected multiple hits for the Generals. The Generals went nine for nine on stolen base attempts on the night.

The Generals take a well-deserved day off tomorrow before heading to Lake Charles for a two-game series with the Gumbeaux Gators. The Generals return home on Thursday night as the Sherman Shadowcats hit Riverside Stadium for a two-game series. Thursday is a Free Ticket Night presented by Texas A&M – Victoria.
