The Victoria Generals handed Brazos Valley Bombers’ ace Bryce Rutherford his first loss of the season on Sunday night in Bryan as the Generals came out on top 9-4. The Generals racked up a season-high 17 hits to earn the win and split the two-game road series with the Bombers.

After back-to-back singles by Frank Cloutier and Alvaro Rondon to lead off the top of the third inning, David Paiz, Jr. drew a walk to load the bases. J.D. Stinnett then hit a ball past the diving Bombers third baseman to score Cloutier and Rondon. J.D. Arrowood then grounded out to score Paiz and give the Generals a 3-0 lead.

The Generals got another run in the top of the seventh inning as Arrowood singled home Romeo Cortina to make it 4-0.

The Generals extended the lead to 6-0 in the top of the eighth. Rondon singled home Cloutier before coming into score later in the inning on a Cortina groundout.

Herb Romero tripled to lead off the bottom of the eighth for the Bombers and came into score on a wild pitch. G.R. Hinsley then doubled home Brett Kauten and Patrick McLendon singled home Hinsley to cut the Generals lead to 6-3.

The Generals got the three runs back in the top of the ninth inning off of Bombers closer Shay Maltese. Three straight singles by Arrowood, Brandon Bohanon, and Jacob Hubert loaded the bases for the Generals. Cloutier then drew a walk to score Arrowood before Drew Featherston delivered a two-run single to score Bohanon and Hubert.

The Bombers used four walks in the bottom of the ninth to score a run, but that would be all they could get as the Generals hung on to win 9-4.

Kaleb Keith tossed five scoreless innings while allowing just four hit and striking out one to pick up the win. Kris Looper allowed three runs in three innings on five hits with one strikeout. Argenis Angulo allowed a run in the ninth on the four walks, but did not allow a hit and struck out the final batter of the game.

Moss and Rondon each had three hits in the game to lead the Generals 17-hit attack.

With the win, the Generals improve to 28-27 overall and 11-14 in the second-half. The Bombers fall to 42-14 on the season and 16-10 in the second-half.

The Generals will have a day off on Monday before traveling to Dallas on Tuesday to take on the Texas Marshals at Jesuit High School in a two-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
