Generals Mount Huge Comeback: Defeat Bombers 10-807/12/2019 10:10 PM
July 12th- The Victoria Generals mounted a seven run comeback on Friday night defeating the Brazos Valley Bombers by a score of 10-8.
The Bombers got out to a quick lead in this one, scoring two runs in the second inning followed by a five run third inning. The Bombers got two runs in the second inning due to a Jacob Padilla hit by pitch and Tyler Smith grounding into a fielder’s choice to score the games first two runs.
The Bombers weren’t done there as they scored five runs in the third inning on walks and errors by the Generals defense. A Tyler Cauley RBI single and a Cole Coker RBI triple pushed the lead to 7-0 and things looked bleak for the Generals.
Deryk Serbantez would get the Generals on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to chip into the lead and make the score 7-1.
The Generals proved they would not go down without a fight when Cole Taylor ripped a two RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning followed by a Justin Barr RBI bunt base hit to narrow the gap to 7-4. Deryk Serbantez came up clutch again in the bottom of the seventh inning when he singled home Tanner Roach cutting the lead to 7-5.
The bottom of the eighth inning is where all the magic happened for the Generals. A hit by pitch to Cole Taylor, a walk to Barr and a bunt base hit by Reese Johnson had the Generals in business with nobody out in the inning. Zac Vooletich came through with a huge two strikeout single that scored both Taylor and Barr and brought the Generals within a run.
Heads up base running by Reese Johnson on an errant pickoff move to first base by the Bombers pitcher Joe Buckendorff finally got the Generals back to even with the Bombers 8-8.
The Generals would take the lead for good when Ryan Flores drew a one out bases loaded walk to give the Generals their first lead of the ball game. Payton Robertson would give the Generals a little extra insurance as he laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt scoring Roach from third base.
Spencer Arrighetti started the game for the Generals, lasting only two innings giving up six runs on three hits. The bullpen was huge down the stretch for the Generals as Serbantez, Ty Abraham, Jack Engelmann and Zach Smith held the Bombers to just two runs over the remaining seven innings.
Jack Engelmann got the win in relief for the Generals while Zach Smith picked up the save, retiring the side in order in the top of the ninth inning.
Hunter Dobbins started for the Bombers going five innings, allowing three hits and one run, striking out eight and only walking one. Joe Buckendorff took the loss in relief for the Bombers.
The Generals road trip to Baton Rouge has been cancelled due to the Tropical Storm Barry that is headed in a direct path for Louisiana. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those staying in Louisiana this weekend as we are praying for safety for everyone!
The Generals next home game will be Wednesday, July 17th when they play host to the Texarkana Twins in the first of a two game series. The game on Wednesday will be a free ticket night courtesy of TISD Internet Service, so no purchase is necessary! We hope to see you all there for yet another exciting home series!
