Generals Defeat Bombers 5-3 for Ninth-Straight Win
July 6, 2023 – The Victoria Generals stayed red-hot with a 5-3 win over the Brazos Valley Bombers at Riverside Stadium, marking their ninth consecutive victory. Victoria fell behind 2-0 early, but a 4-run fifth inning put it on top for the rest of the ballgame, needing just four hits for the triumph.
UTSA RHP Zach Royse pitched the first four innings from the mound, surrendering one earned run and one unearned on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts. In his first game with the Generals, Texas Tech RHP Hayde Key gave up one run over the next two frames on two hits and two walks with two punchouts. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi RHP Austin Dean closed the last three innings with just three walks and a punchout.
Kalamazoo College DH Robert Newland led the way on offense with two hits, while UT-Arlington 1B Tyce Armstrong’s 3-run double put the team ahead for good in the fifth. A&M-Corpus Christi LF Drake Kerr drew three of Victoria’s eight walks with Abilene Christian SS Riley Bender collecting two.
An RBI single in the third inning and a passed ball in the fourth gave Brazos Valley the initial lead, but McNeese State 2B Easton Dowell’s bases-loaded walk and Armstrong’s 3-run double contributed to four runs in the fifth inning. A pickoff attempt plated a run for the Bombers in the sixth, but Texas State CF Damien Whitfield’s RBI fielder’s choice added an insurance run for Victoria in the bottom of the frame.
Next, the Generals take on the Acadiana Cane Cutters on Friday, July 7, at 7:05 p.m. at Riverside Stadium. It’s Free Ticket Night, presented by Victory Buick/GMC/Kia.
