Generals Top the Cane Cutters to Split the Series

July 27, 2022- The Generals played game two of a two-game series tonight against the Acadiana Cane Cutters in Riverside Stadium on Faith and Family Night presented by Klean Corp International. The Generals struggled in last night's game at the plate as the Cane Cutters took that one 4-0. The Generals hoped to bounce back tonight to even out the series as the final week of TCL regular season play wraps up.

Hunter Murray started on the mound for the Generals. In the top of the first, the Cane Cutters put runners on the corners with only one out which put them in potential scoring position. Murray handed out back to back strikeouts to prevent the Cane Cutters from scoring first in this ball game. The Generals got on the board first in the bottom of the first after Jackson Hardy, the Generals center fielder, hit a lead-off Solo Home Run which made the score 1-0.

The Generals defense got the job done in the top of the second as Murray threw two more strikeouts and the Generals catcher, Angel Mendoza, had a throw down at first as the Cane Cutter on first had too big of a lead off and Mendoza’s great field vision helped the Generals hold their lead. The Cane Cutters started to get more comfortable at the plate which helped them tie the game 1-1 off of a sac-fly. The Generals momentum was building at the plate in the bottom of the second. Isaiah Walker was hit by a pitch, Adam Becker, the third baseman who has had a great defensive night, hit a single shortly after. Chase Sanguanetti walked on a full count which made the bases loaded. Walker helped extend the Generals lead 2-1 as he came home off of a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Generals were not done yet at the plate as they had runners on the corners due to some hot bats. With Blake Bean, the Generals left fielder, on third, the newest addition to the Generals DJ Butler stepped up to the plate and hit an RBI to bring in Bean to extend the Generals lead 3-1. The Cane Cutters could not respond as they went scoreless for three straight innings due to dominant defense from the Generals and Murray on the mound who threw five strikeouts, allowed six hits, and one earned run through six innings pitched.

The Generals made a pitching change in the top of the seventh as they brought JJ Slack on the mound to help hold the Cane Cutters and the Generals lead. Slack threw two strikeouts early and to end the inning, Mendoza had his second throw down of the night, this one to second to get the final out as the Generals looked to extend or hold their lead late in this game. Slack ended the night with four strikeouts, no hits, and no earned runs through two innings pitched.

To close out the game, Will Duncan stepped onto the mound for the Generals as they held the lead 3-1 after both teams had gone scoreless for four straight innings. The Cane Cutters offensive effort in the top of the ninth was not enough for a comeback as Duncan threw two strikeout, allowing no hits or earned runs which helped the Generals take this one 3-1.

The Generals are not done yet as they will be back in Riverside Stadium tomorrow night as they take on the Seguin River Monsters for game one of a three-game series. Tomorrow is Free Ticket Night presented by Victoria College and the first pitch will be thrown at 7:05.
