Generals Win Home Opener 9-6 Over Marshals

The Victoria Generals returned to action at Riverside Stadium on Tuesday night for the team’s home opener to the 2013 season as they took down the Texas Marshals by a final score of 9-6 in front of a packed crowd.

The Generals sent Victoria native and Memorial High School graduate Daniel Tunchez, Jr. to the mound. Tunchez worked his way out of trouble in the first inning, allowing just a single run on a wild pitch.

The Generals offense answered in the bottom of the second inning as Romeo Cortina doubled and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. Hayden Vesely singled home Drew Featherston later in the inning to give the Generals a 2-1 advantage.

The Generals extended the lead in the fourth as Mac Seibert singled home Vesely before Cortina drilled a two-run single to score Kyle Thornell and David Paiz, Jr. Later in the inning, Seibert scored on Jacob Hubert groundout to make it 6-1.

The Marshals would respond with three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to tie the game up at 6-6.
Tunchez gave up four runs in five innings with six strikeouts.

In the bottom of the sixth, Paiz blasted the Generals first home run of the season, a solo shot down the left-field line. Aaron Morgan tripled home Cortina later in the inning and came into score on a sacrifice fly by Hubert to make it 9-6.

The score would hold that way as Juan Cortina pitched a scoreless eighth and Glenn Sparkman notched his second save of the season as he struck out the side in the ninth.

Chase Angelle picked up the win in relief, his first of the season, allowing two unearned runs on one hit with two strikeouts in two innings.

Cortina and Seibert paced the Generals offense with three hits apiece.

With the win, the Generals improve to 4-1 on the season and the Marshals fall to 2-3.

The two teams will meet again on Wednesday night in game two of the series at 7:05pm.

It will be High School Spirit Night at the Generals game on Wednesday. All students, faculty, and staff that present an ID card at the gate will be let in for free. It will also be the first Wingstop Winning Wednesday of the season. If the Generals win on Wednesday night, fans can redeem their ticket stub at the following Wednesday home game for free admission. The Generals will also have Baseball “Wingo” with lots of great prizes for the winners.
